2003 NHL Entry Draft
The first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in Nashville didn't live up to its high expectations with no big blockbuster trades or surprise picks making their way to the podium. The big mystery of who would get first overall ended anticlimactically with the Florida Panthers trading the first pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for young right-winger Mikael Samuelsson and the Pens' no. 3 pick. The Penguins used that pick on Cape Breton Screaming Eagles' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury making him the second goalie ever to go first overall. With the depth of talent available the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Columbus Blue Jackets who drafted next left with the player they wanted. The Hurricanes picking second chose standout Peterborough Pete's center Eric Staal. The Panthers moving down with the trade picked Nathan Horton of the Oshawa Generals who earlier in the season was considered the no.1 overall pick. The Columbus Blue Jackets took the first non-North American picking Russian sniper Nikolai Zherdev. Also in the draft the Nashville Predators picked USA Hockey Gold medallist Bob Suter's son Ryan Suter seventh overall. The Calgary Flames picked Dion Phaneuf of the Red Deer Rebels who is coached by GM Darryl Sutter's brother Brent. The Montreal Canadiens took a chance on Belarus forward Andrei Kostitsyn who has had a shaky medical history in the past season. The Ottawa Senators who had to tough it out at Gaylord Center after learning of the death of assistant coach Roger Neilson to cancer picked Boston College right-winger Patrick Eaves.
